Opatanol eye drops - is an antihistamine / antiallergic drug based on olopatadine for topical application in ophthalmology, used to stop allergic eye damage (conjunctivitis and keratitis). The drug can be used for a long time, almost does not cause side effects.
Olopatanol hydrochloride is a potent selective antihistamine / antiallergic agent used in ophthalmology. The drug prevents the release of histamine and the induced release of cytokines that are inflammatory mediators, cells of the eye mucosa by stabilizing the membranes of mast cells and suppressing their functional activity. By reducing the permeability of the conjunctival vessels, the drug reduces the possibility of contact of the allergen with mast cells of the eye mucosa.
With topical application in ophthalmology, eye drops of Opatallol eliminate symptoms accompanying seasonal allergic keratoconjunctivitis (swelling, burning or itching, reddening of the mucous membrane of the eyes). The selective effect of the drug only applies to histamine H1 receptors, without having any effect on dopamine, serotonin and cholinergic receptors. Does not change the diameter of the pupil.
With topical application, the maximum concentration in the blood is observed after 2 hours, the absorption and systemic effect of the drug is negligible, the half-life is about 3-4 hours, the metabolites are mainly excreted by the kidneys. When used in patients with severe impairment of kidney function, an increase in the content of olopatadine in blood plasma is observed, however, correction of the dosage of the drug in elderly patients with impaired renal or hepatic function is not required.
The drug can be prescribed for a long time, including to prevent the development of eye damage in patients with seasonal allergic conjunctivitis in the anamnesis. With the preventive purpose of the drug is recommended to begin one to two weeks before the alleged contact with the allergen.
When prescribing eye drops data, the need for corticosteroids for the reduction of severe allergic eye damage decreases.
