Pharmachologic effect

Mode of action - Replenishing iron deficiency, anti-anemia.

Participates in the construction of hemoglobin, myoglobin, as well as enzymes (including cytochromes, catalases, peroxidases), stimulates erythropoiesis, regulates the processes of tissue respiration.

Pharmacodynamics

Part of the iron that enters the body is used for the synthesis of iron-containing compounds, the other is deposited in the form of ferritin and hemosiderin, mainly in the liver and spleen.

The daily need for iron of a healthy adult is 3-4 mg / day.

Pharmacokinetics

The degree of iron absorption depends on the iron deficiency in the body. In people with a significant iron deficiency, the absorption rate is 10-30% (while for people with normal levels of iron - 5-15%). Preparations of Fe2 + do not require a preliminary reduction and are easily absorbed in the duodenum and in the upper part of the small intestine. Hypochromic iron deficiency anemia, with insufficient intake of iron in the body or increased need for iron: pregnancy, breast-feeding, donation, a period of active growth, blood loss (surgery, childbirth, excessive menstrual or irregular and profuse bleeding in menopause).

Contraindications

Gastrointestinal dysfunction that interferes with iron absorption, iron metabolism disorders, hemosiderosis, hemochromatosis, anemia not caused by iron deficiency (hemolytic or aplastic).

Side effects

Interaction

Tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, D-penicillamine and gastric acid-lowering agents reduce iron absorption, vitamin C-increases.

Dosing and Administration

Inside, between meals or on an empty stomach. Adults and children over 12 years of age, with the goal of prevention - 1 dragee once a day; For treatment - 1 tablet twice a day with an interval of 12 hours. Duration of treatment - from 2 weeks to 6 months. If symptoms of intolerance arise from the GI tract, the drug should be taken immediately after a meal.

Overdose

Symptoms: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, increased capillary permeability, rapid pulse, cardiovascular collapse.

Treatment: gastric lavage, administration of deferoxamine (binds iron ions).

Precaution Measures

It should be borne in mind that the use for a long time, significantly exceeding the necessary for replenishing the resources of iron, can cause metabolic acidosis, convulsions, coma, necrosis of the liver and death. During treatment, every 3-4 weeks should monitor the morphological composition of blood and the concentration of iron in the blood.

With caution apply for peptic ulcer of the stomach, duodenal ulcer, ulcerative colitis, enteritis.
