Levomycetin (Chloramphenicol, chloromycetin) eye drops - is a broad-spectrum antibiotic; is effective against many gram-positive cocci (gonococci and meningococci), various bacteria (intestinal and hemophilic rods, salmonella, shigella, klebsiella, serratsii, iersbnia, proteus), rickettsia, spirochaete and some large viruses. The drug is active against strains resistant to penicillin, streptomycin, sulfonamides. It is weakly active against acid-fast bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, clostridia and protozoa.
It acts bacteriostatically. The mechanism of antibacterial action is associated with a violation of the synthesis of proteins of microorganisms.
Drug resistance to the drug develops relatively slowly, with, as a rule, no cross-resistance to other chemotherapeutic agents.
Pharmacokinetics
The therapeutic concentration of levomycetin in topical application is created in the cornea, watery moisture, iris, vitreous; the drug does not penetrate into the lens.
It is excreted mainly with urine in the form of inactive metabolites.

All drugs chloramphenicol is not recommended for fungal skin lesions, eczema, psoriasis, with drug intolerance, with porphyria. It is not recommended that the drug be administered to pregnant women, nursing mothers, newborn children, blood diseases, liver or kidney dysfunction, with a tendency to allergies. It is not recommended for patients undergoing radiation therapy, patients with angina and acute respiratory disease.
Special instructions:
Due to the high toxicity, it is not recommended without resorting to banal infections, colds, flu, pharyngitis, bacteriocarriers for treatment and prevention.
Severe complications from the hematopoietic system, as a rule, are associated with the use of large doses (more than 4 g / day) for a long time. During the treatment, systematic monitoring of the peripheral blood pattern is necessary.
In fetuses and newborns, the liver is not sufficiently developed to bind chloramphenicol, and the drug can accumulate in toxic concentrations and lead to the development of a "gray syndrome", so children in the first months of life the drug is prescribed only for vital indications.
Be wary appoint patients who received previous treatment with cytostatic drugs or radiation therapy.
Suggested Use:
The drug is instilled in the conjunctival sac by 1 drop 3-4 times / day.
If the patient takes the drug at his discretion, then it is not recommended to use more than three days without consulting a doctor.
