Pharmacological effect of Phenylpropanolamine
Pharmachologic effect anorectic, vasoconstriction.
It has sympathomimetic effects. It stimulates the release of norepinephrine from nerve endings stimulates mostly the central alpha-adrenergic receptors, inhibits hypothalamic center of the appetite (anorectic effect).
Indications for Phenylpropanolamine
Decreased appetite, including obesity.
Contraindications for Phenylpropanolamine
Hypersensitivity, ischemic heart disease, heart failure in the phase of decompensation, hypertension, central nervous system diseases, bronchial asthma, glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, prostate hyperplasia, pregnancy, lactation, children's age (12 years).
Side effect
Diarrhoeal phenomenon, coronary artery disease exacerbation, hypertension; headache, tremor, psychomotor disturbances, dizziness, insomnia, irritability.
Interaction
Against the background of propranolol, atenolol, cardiac glycosides may cause arrhythmias. It increases the toxicity of the central nervous system stimulants and MAO inhibitors (agitation, tremors, hypertension). Reserpine effect weakens.
