Characteristics of Bismuth subgallate

Amorphous powder of lemon-yellow color, odorless and tasteless. Almost nerastvorim in water and alcohol. Soluble when heated in mineral acids (with decomposition). Easily soluble in a solution of caustic soda to form a yellow solution that rapidly blushes in air. Contains 52-54% of bismuth oxide.

Pharmacology

Pharmacological action - anti-inflammatory, astringent, drying.

In the presence of sufficient concentration in the place of application, the colloidal seal (coagulated proteins) causes extracellular fluid, mucus, exudate, and cell membranes. The resulting film protects the end of the sensitive nerves from irritation, reduces the feeling of pain, limits or prevents the development of edema. Being practically insoluble in water bismuth salt, slightly absorbed. The resorbed part is excreted mainly with urine, but a certain amount can be retained in bones and tissues (able to accumulate, causing an intoxication syndrome). Bismuth penetrates the placenta. It causes local narrowing of the vessels, reduces their permeability, reduces exudation, reduces the intensity of the inflammatory process. It does not irritate tissues (the resulting albumin weakly dissociates). When ingesting, enveloping and antacid effects may appear.

Application of Bismuth subgallate

Inflammatory diseases of the skin and mucous membranes, accompanied by exudation (ulcers, dermatitis, eczema), hemorrhoids, genital warts; diarrhea, ulcerative colitis.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity.

Side effects

Allergic reactions.

Overdose

Since it is very rarely used for oral administration, acute poisoning, as a consequence of an overdose, is infrequent. With chronic intoxication, febrile condition, gastrointestinal disturbances, rash, stomatitis, nephritis and nephrosis are noted. Sometimes there is a dark border around the gums. An effective antidote is dimercaprol and other sulfhydryl compounds.

Routes of administration

Outer, inward, rectally.
